Background and history
Port Jefferson Station was originally inhabited by Native Americans who named the town “Comsewogue” (or “Sowasset”)—the Native American term for either “place of small pines” or “where water opens”. The first settler, William Tooker, arrived in 1750.
The first community was rural and dependent on farming. The Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1873, which led to the community being named Port Jefferson Station.
Nesconset Highway was constructed in the 1950s, shifting the primarily farming community to one of suburban growth. By the early 1970s, Port Jefferson Station was a primarily suburban community. The village has since transitioned to a tourist-based economy.
