Background and history

Incorporated in 1927, Old Field is home to the Old Field Point Lighthouse—that faint beacon in the distance just west of the harbor as you ride the Port Jefferson ferry—which stands guard over the area’s dangerous cliffs.

First built by the U.S. government in 1823 for $2,500—and finished a year later for another $1,500—the lighthouse and adjacent Keeper’s Cottage served as the Old Field village hall and caretaker’s home. The first light was built in 1868 with nine whale oil lamps, magnified by a large glass reflector until the builders switched to an automatic revolving light in 1933.

The U.S. government gave the lighthouse back to Old Field in 1935, with the provision that the government can take it back in case of a national emergency. During World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard did just that, giving the lighthouse back to the community after the war. Today, the Old Field light shines on New York’s Long Island Sound.
