Patchogue NY Homes for Sale: Your Moving Guide
The village of Patchogue, located on Long Island’s dynamic South Shore, has long thrived as an area surrounded by water, where direct access to the Great South Bay has driven growth and expansion since the beginning. Today, a population of 12,408 lives and works in this popular, revitalized town, where Main Street creates a charming, walkable downtown bustling with vibrant restaurants, shops, and lively events.
Buying a home in Patchogue places you about 55 miles east of Manhattan and between general border lines including Blue Point on the West, Roe Boulevard on the North, Bay Avenue on the East, and the Great South Bay on the South. Patchogue is also home to Blue Point Brewing Company, which opened in 1998 and remains the only commercial brewery on Long Island.
Background and history
Patchogue got its original name from a local Native American tribe, Pochaug. The village began in 1750 when three families moved and settled as the first people to live in the area. However, the village didn’t become a major town until one of the original landowners sold 36 land plots in a lottery to make extra money.
The lottery winners settled down in and built up the area, making an abundant living in the oyster, fishing, cotton mill, and shipping industries. Local business owners traded within New York City markets by boat, using the Patchogue River as transportation.
In 1869, trade, commerce, and tourism changed drastically after the construction of the South Side Railroad, which made Patchogue the terminus of the railroad line until 1881. Patchogue thrived from the expansion, building hotels, boat docks, and other popular spots that made the town a well-known vacationing spot.
Booming business earned Patchogue the nicknames, “Milltown” and “Queen Village of Suffolk,” symbolizing its reputation as an economic and vacation hotspot. Hotels no longer exist in Patchogue, but the population is still bustling within the town.
