Patchogue got its original name from a local Native American tribe, Pochaug. The village began in 1750 when three families moved and settled as the first people to live in the area. The lottery winners settled down in and built up the area, making an abundant living in the oyster, fishing, cotton mill, and shipping industries. Local business owners traded within New York City markets by boat, using the Patchogue River as transportation.

Booming business earned Patchogue the nicknames, “Milltown” and “Queen Village of Suffolk,” symbolizing its reputation as an economic and vacation hotspot. Hotels no longer exist in Patchogue, but the population is still bustling within the town.
