Just over ten thousand people live here, many of whom trace their ethnic heritage back to southern Italy, Ireland, and the historical Czech lands. Bohemia has grown more diverse over the years, especially as more people migrate here from western Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.

History of Bohemia

The Secatogue tribe of the Algonquian peoples were the first to inhabit Bohemia. The area was founded in 1885 by Slavic immigrants whose pilgrimage coincided with a wave of Bohemian nationals emigrating to the United States, many embodying the free spirited and enlightened lifestyles synonymous with bohemianism.

The Slavic immigrants brought excellent cigar-making skills, which sparked a thriving local cigar industry that continued until the 1930s when mechanized production replaced hand manufacturing. Despite their impact on the town’s history and heritage, none of Bohemia’s eight original cigar factories remain today.

Over the years, many people tried to change the name of Bohemia over fears that ties to one ethnic group would keep new people and businesses from coming to the town. None of the proposed new names—including Sayville Heights, Lidice, and MacArthur—received enough public support to finalize a change.
