Wading River has a rich history dating back to colonial times. Originally settled by the Native American Meroke tribes, European settlers arrived in the late 1600s. Today, Wading River retains the character of a classic New England town, with steepled churches, a village green, and a handful of homes dating back to colonial times. The Wading River itself flows through the hamlet.

Wading River’s population is small, with about 8,300 residents occupying 3,123 households, according to the U.S. Census. Median household income was about $127,000 in 2021. Most residents are employed in the following job groups: Education Instruction, & Library Occupations (701 people), Office & Administrative Support Occupations (522 people), and Sales & Related Occupations (514 people).

Housing and Property Values

Transportation and Traffic

Traffic in Wading River is generally light, although it can get heavier during the summer months when seasonal sightseeing is at its peak.

Local Attractions
The natural dominant attraction in Wading River is of course its glorious waterfront. Wading River has several beautiful beaches along the Long Island Sound, providing residents and visitors with opportunities for relaxation and water activities. Another popular attraction is Wildwood State Park, a 600-acre, undeveloped hardwood forest terminating in a high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound.

Other natural attractions include Brookhaven State Park: 1638 acres of wild land offering 25 miles of multiuse trails, as well as the Great Rock Golf Club, a private 18-hole course.

The area boasts several historical sites, including the Wading River Historical Society’s focal point, the Daniel W. Kissam House. This historic house offers a glimpse into the hamlet’s past and is open to the public for tours. Additionally, Wading River is near several other natural preserves and parks. Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, for example, offers hiking trails and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Wading River has a wonderful rural character characteristic of towns and hamlets in the North Fork Region. Five family farms are located within Wading River; along nearby Route 25A you can find farm stands and orchards, with many establishments offering “pick your own” strawberries, peaches and pumpkins in season.

Riverhead, a bustling city named by Forbes Magazine in 2023 as a “Best Place to Travel” is a short drive from Wading River and offers many additional dining and recreational activities.

You don’t have to venture into Riverhead to find a nice place to eat. Local eateries include La Plage (French cuisine by the beach), Desmond’s Restaurant & Pub, the Greek Island Diner, the North Tavern, and Ruggero’s. Local bars include Phil’s Restaurant & Sports LNG, Pure North Fork, the North Tavern, and Truffles Bistro Restaurant.

Wading River’s public school system is the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District, which administers Miller Avenue School, Wading River School, Prodell Middle School, and SRW High School. This district won the 2019 National Blue-Ribbon School award from the U.S. Department of Education. Higher education institutions proximate to Wading River include Suffolk County Community College, Saint Joseph’s College, and Dowling College.
